SOAR cannot successfully achieve our mission without the knowledge, professionalism, dedication, and enthusiasm of our amazing volunteers.

If you are interested in helping to bring a bright future to Bay Area foster youth, please take a look at the opportunities described here. We pledge to make your volunteering experience with SOAR a productive and rewarding one.

Volunteer Opportunities Requiring Background Check

All volunteers for the following positions will be fingerprinted for a criminal record check and Child Abuse index clearance. No one with convictions or records that would pose a risk to youth may hold any of the following volunteer positions.

Counselor (Summer & Academic School Year):

Are you older than 18 and have the following attributes? We would love to have you with us at our summer camps:

Attitude: Positive. Love to help others. Good manners.
Skills: Good interpersonal communication skills. Ability to participate in rigorous outdoor activities with camp youth. Swimming ability preferred.
Experience: Prior youth work experience preferred.

Academic Advocate:

Are you willing to help one special foster youth prepare for college and independence? We have workshops that will give you the tools you need; all you have to bring to the table are your willingness, commitment, and time.

Program Counselor/Chaperone:

Are you good with youth? We provide 24×7 supervision when our youth are at our summer academy sessions. We strive to have at least one adult chaperone for every 4 youth and require consistency throughout a one-week summer session. You don’t have to stay overnight if you can only be with the youth in the mornings or in the afternoons.

Volunteer Opportunities NOT Requiring Background Check

The following volunteer opportunities do not require a Background Check and can mostly be done remotely and not on-site (perfect for ANYONE!)

Fund/Grant Writers:

Are you good at grant writing? We could use your talents to increase our funding sources in order that we can serve more youth.

Host a “Friends-Raiser”:

Want to help fund raise for SOAR? By hosting a small, informal gathering of friends and/or families, you can help us educate people about the unique challenges that foster youth face and what we do to help them become contributing members of society.

Sponsor a SOAR Presentation/Session:

Do you belong to a group and like what we do? By inviting a SOAR representative to speak at one of your group’s regular gatherings you can help us get the word out on what we do to help foster youth realize their full potential.

Plan and Coordinate Activities:

Do you plan/execute well and share our commitment in helping foster youth grow in mind, body, and spirit? We could use your help in the planning and execution of our summer camps and/or the activities for our winter reunion event.
